Radiation is something that many of us encounter in our everyday lives, though we may not always be aware of it. Most of the radiation we are exposed to comes from natural sources. This includes cosmic radiation from space and natural radioactivity found in the earth, air, and water. In fact, the highest radiation dose that most people receive is a result of these naturally occurring sources.
However, there is also radiation from artificial sources. One of the most significant contributors to this is diagnostic x-rays, which account for roughly 25 percent of the population’s total radiation exposure. While this may sound like a substantial amount, it’s important to remember that x-rays are by far the greatest artificial source of radiation exposure to the population.
As technology continues to advance, it’s essential to understand the balance between natural and artificial radiation exposure. While the natural background radiation is unavoidable, diagnostic x-rays are used to diagnose and treat medical conditions, ultimately providing immense benefits to health and well-being. Still, like with any medical procedure, it’s important to manage and limit unnecessary exposure to radiation whenever possible.
